Remus's Journey
Our journey started in July 2020 when Remus was 7 and a half after a nurse at Ipswich Hospital trusted her instincts. Within 5 minutes we were in a room with lots of people explaining that a mass was found and that it is most likely cancer. The official diagnosis of Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis came shortly after and thus our path in the world of childhood cancer begun. Remus joined a trial due to the aggressive nature of his cancer and with the support of a wonderful team at Addenbrookes and Ipswich hospital Remus learnt how to walk again, the tumour has shrunk and he is still being cared for now as he carries on his cancer journey.
Our friends helped raise money through a climb up Ben Nevis to his Dad's online racing team mates pulling together amongst others. It really showed our son and us as a family that people from all around the world were there cheering him on the whole time, even when he didn't have the energy himself. He feels so grateful he gets to be home with his family, to swim and be at school. Because he knows that isn't the case for so many other children, he decided to make a choice. He wants to make a difference in this world by raising money for Young Lives vs Cancer in his own way, just like all the people who helped him. This will be through school bake sales, to fun runs, fun swims as well as selling Young Lives vs Cancer pin badges and raising awareness as he goes - that kids get cancer too!!
Even on his worse days he always has a smile on his face and a wonderful caring personality. He doesn't allow his diagnosis to hold him back not even when he volunteers through a local charity, goes onto win a Green Hero award with his brother for their commitment to Felixstowe's nature, attends Scouts and earnt his second Blue Peter Badge - the Silver one!! He is even now going for this third badge. As a Head Boy at his school, his heart of gold really shines and it makes us so proud.
We don't know what the future holds for him but we know we will get him through anything that comes his way.
